The idea of building a Sportsracer was something that Adam and Kevin developed over a number of years. It has been a long process of ideas being explored, developed, tossed in the rubbish bin only to be later dug out and reconsidered. There have been a few "Eureka" moments, but mostly a series of ebb and flow.
The genesis for the project were the constant, punitive adjustments levied against Adam and Kevin through their club racing careers. The idea of building a car where there were no provisions in the rulebook for competition adjustments was most appealing. More of a run what you brung and you better bring LOTS sort of class,,,, it struck a chord.
The SCCA's C and D sportsracer class is just this sort of environment, the rules are short and succinct, all the rope one needs to cause real trouble, Adam and Kevin were hooked.
After watching the cars, looking at how they were built and campaigned, the pair decided that they wanted to do a complete car. They would design the body, chassis, do the engines,,,, the whole shooting match. Adam taking on the lion's share of the body development and Kevin doing the chassis. There's lots of crossover, many times one would help,,,, well, more like push, the other over a rough spot, lots of late nights and discussions about what the car should be.
The body construction began in earnest in the fall of 2004 with a full size drawing on the shop wall, as it happens the final project bears little resemblance to that artwork, but the general outline was laid down.
On the next pages we will go more in depth about the build process.
